For Charlottetown youth not able to go to the big top and watch a circus this summer, the Confederation Centre Public Library isoffering the next best thing.

Circus tricks

The 1864 Circus an art exhibit recently put on display is an encased, diorama-type collection of miniature colourful statues performing circus tricks. Among the performers are clowns, dogs, cats, horses, trapeze artists, acrobats, animals jumping through fiery hoops and pigs in costumes.

Created by Terry Dunton-Stevenson in 2014, the exhibit has been catching the eye of the city's youth since being put on display.

Jennifer Howard, the children's librarian, explained the 1864 theme is based on a legacy project and is inspired by actual events that year when two circuses came to P.E.I. from the U.S.

"It seems to be very true to the era for which it was designed for," she said.

The exhibit arrived at the library in April and doesn't have an end date at this point, explained Howard.
