Eastern P.E.I. needs help in storm aftermath, says NDP

The P.E.I. government needs to step up and implement an emergency action plan immediately for the residents of Kings County, says NDP Leader Mike Redmond.

As of early Thursday morning 1,800 Maritime Electric customers had no electricity following a storm that swept over the area Sunday.

"These are extraordinary circumstances and they call for government to step in with a plan," said Redmond.

He said the government needs to check in on seniors, persons with disabilities, and people whom are home alone.

The NDP would also like to see a fund reserved for people who do not have insurance and may have lost a fridge or a freezer full of food.

Threshold for emergency funding

Opposition leader Jamie Fox also called on the government to do more for Islanders affected by the power outage in the legislature on Wednesday.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan responded that conditions on P.E.I. hadn't reached the threshold required to trigger emergency federal funding and that Islanders should look to their insurance policies first.
