Sisters looking at other locations after council rejects rezoning for convent, daycare

Three nuns from the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Ragusa are still hoping to move to Summerside in the summer of 2017 to serve at St. Paul's Parish and eventually establish a daycare. (Submitted by Diocese of Charlottetown)

Nuns from Ontario still have faith they can establish a convent and daycare in Summerside, according to a local priest who has been helpingthem.

The nuns' request to rezone a property on South Drive was rejected this week by Summerside city council.

"Obviously they're disappointed in the decision but they're still committed to coming to Summerside so would like to try something else," said Father Chris Sherren of St. Paul's Church in Summerside.

Some neighbours opposed the rezoning because they were concerned about traffic from the daycare.

Other suggestions

Sherren believes the nuns and neighbours would have worked things out in the end, had the property on South Drive been rezoned institutional.

But since council's decision, people have been coming forward with other suggestions, Sherren said. City council has made some efforts to helpas well.

"We're going to look at a few other properties," he said.
