RCMP car struck while assisting at accident

RCMP on P.E.I. are urging motorists to slow down when approaching accident scenes or when they see police cars at the side of the road with their roof lights on, following an accident in Stratford Wednesday.

In a news release, RCMP say they had responded to a report of a vehicle that went into the ditch on Route 1 in Stratford at 4:30 a.m. The two people involved were not hurt, but the vehicle was badly damaged and required a tow truck.

Road conditions at the time were described as very icy.

Considerable damage

At 5:15 there were two RCMP cruisers on the scene with their roof lights on to provide traffic control while the tow truck worked.

Police say a vehicle travelling west on Route 1 failed to slow down while approaching the scene, and the driver lost control and ran into an unoccupied RCMP car. The driver was not injured, but both vehicles sustained considerable damage. The police car is believed to be a writeoff.

RCMP said given there were people standing around assisting with the tow truck it is fortunate there were no injuries.

An investigation of the accident is underway, and charges may be laid against the driver.
