RCMP in P.E.I. are reminding drivers to slow down in the winter conditions, after responding to 11 "fairly serious" motor vehicle accidents since 4 p.m. Sunday.

"Motorists need to slow down and drive with care, especially on arterial highways and secondary roads that are often snow covered and treacherous," said Staff Sgt. Mark T. Crowther in a news release.

Three of the collisions involved injuries, but no serious injuries were sustained and everyone admitted to hospital was released, said RCMP.

Four of the incidents were roll-over incidents in which the vehicles were severely damaged.

'Disastrous consequences'

"Almost every one of the accidents since yesterday resulted from a combination of speed and hazardous road conditions leading to loss of control," said Crowther. "Driving too fast for road conditions can have disastrous consequences."

RCMP say drivers should plan extra time to arrive at their destinations, should ensure there's enough distance between them and the vehicles around them, and should ensure they are using winter tires in good condition.
