Endless summer? P.E.I. basking in warm September

Autumn arrives on P.E.I. Thursday, but you wouldn't know summer has been on the wane from watching the weather.

Autumn arrives on P.E.I. Thursday, but you wouldn't know summer has been on the wane from watching the weather.

To date, the average temperature in September has been 2.5 C above normal.

September temperatures
Average 2016
Daytime high 19 C 21.5 C
Nighttime low 10 C 12.5 C

There have been four days where the temperature hit 25 C or higher (five, if you count Sept. 9, when the temperature was 24.7 C). Those were glorious summer days in any month.

And there were only five nights where the temperature fell below the seasonal average of 10 C. Three of those came in the first four days of the month, and may have passed out of your memory by now.

Fall is really coming

It may seem like an endless summer, but don't get used to it, says CBC meteorologist Kalin Mitchell.

"We are headed for an abrupt turnaround in temperatures for the last part of September," he said.

"It will be brisk for the province with daytime highs struggling into the low teens and overnight lows in the single digits."

Wednesday, which was the last full day of summer, is likely to be the last day of the month with temperatures making it into the 20s.

Mitchell said the cool temperatures in the last week of September are likely to bring the average temperature for the whole month closer to the seasonal normal.

Sorry.
