An off-duty police officer in Summerside, P.E.I., caught up with a man believed to be stealing things from vehicles in the early morning hours of Saturday.

The officer observed a man going through vehicles in the High Street area shortly after 4 a.m. and held him until patrol officers arrived.

A 35-year-old man was charged for several thefts from motor vehicles and trespass at night. A second man, 23, was arrested later that day and also charged.

The men have been released pending a court date in November, and have been issued undertakings that they stay away from each other.

Stealing from vehicles around Brophy Street

It was the second arrest for theft from vehicles in Summerside in two days.

On Friday, shortly before noon, police received a report of a man going through vehicles in the Brophy Street area.

A bank card was stolen, which was later used at a local establishment. Police were able to identify a suspect a 16-year-old Summerside boy.

The boy was arrested on Sunday. He remains in custody, and police say he faces numerous theft and fraud charges.

Summerside police reminded people to lock the doors of their vehicles.
