100 Syrian refugee families can resettle in P.E.I., says premier

P.E.I. is prepared to do more than its share to help with the federal government's plan to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015, Prince Edward Island's premier says.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan said P.E.I. will be able to accept 100 families.

"That would be in excess of what might be our proportion according to the Canadian population of the 25,000," said MacLauchlan.

"We're aware that there are various community organizations and private initiatives that are already in place to receive one or even two families. So this is a positive start."

MacLauchlan is preparing for the first minister's meeting being held Nov 23. The meeting was called by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and is the first of its kind since 2009.

The prime minister has identified the Syrian refugee crisis and climate change as the top priorities he wants to discuss at the meeting.
