A Charlottetown taxi driver charged with sexually assaulting a passenger in his cab is now in police custody.

Paramveer Singh Bhurjee, 31, was scheduled to appear in P.E.I. Provincial Court on Oct. 12, but failed to show up.

He was arrested by RCMP and appeared in court on Thursday.

Bhurjee was charged after a female passenger alleged she was assaulted by a driver in the front passenger seat of a Good Taxi Service cab in the early hours of Aug. 14.

The woman cannot be named because of a court-ordered publication ban.

In August, she told CBC News the cab was driving her from Charlottetown over the Hillsborough Bridge, when the driver grabbed her chest forcefully.

She said that she immediately called 911 and that the driver let her out of the taxi in Stratford.

Bhurjee will remain in custody until his next court date on Monday.

His taxi licence has been suspended.
