P.E.I. cold-case murder trial adjourned again

The defence for Todd Joseph Gallant, accused in the 1988 killing of Byron Carr, requested and received another adjournment on Thursday.

This is the fifth adjournment in the case. The 56-year-old Gallant, who also goes by the name of Irving, is charged with first-degree murder and interfering with human remains in connection with Carr's death on Nov. 11, 1988. Carr was strangled in his Charlottetown home.

In court Wednesday defence lawyer Chris Montigny said there is "a lot to manage" in terms of the evidence collected against Gallant by police.

The Carr case lay dormant for almost 20 years before being reopened in 2007. Police say it was genetic genealogy that finally led to Gallant's arrest in January of this year.

Gallant did not appear in court Wednesday. He agreed to remain in custody until his next court date.

Gallant has not yet entered a plea, and the allegations have not been heard in court.
