RCMP investigating 'suspicious' fire in western P.E.I.

East Prince RCMP say a fire in western P.E.I. that destroyed a mobile home Friday has been deemed suspicious.

"Investigators believe the fire may have been intentionally set," RCMP said in a news release issued Monday.

Desmond Arsenault, a spokesman for the Wellington Fire Department, said they were alerted to the fire at 7:50 a.m. Friday, after a passerby noticed smoke at the building on St. Raphael's Road and called 911.

Arsenault said getting a call in the early morning meant for a faster response time because the volunteers were still at home in the nearby community of Wellington, P.E.I.

"There was some flames in the dwelling upon arrival, however due to the quick response of our members they were able to extinguish the flames immediately and prevent any further damage," said Arsenault.

"Red Cross was contacted, because unfortunately the home is uninhabitable at the present time, due to the extensive smoke and water damage."

The man who owned the home was not there at the time.

RCMP continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 902-436-9300.

RCMP called in on 2nd fire

Firefighters in West Prince were also called to a fire in St. Louis on the weekend.

Sunday afternoon the Miminegash Fire Department responded to a fire in a vacant building.

The fire marshal's office has turned the case over to the RCMP for investigation.

Since Oct. 1, the fire marshal has turned over investigations of 12 fires in vacant buildings to RCMP.
