A fisherman on his way to the wharf in western P.E.I. Tuesday morning was injured when his vehicle hit a depression in the highway.

The accident happened on Route 14, the coastal highway in western P.E.I., at the bridge in Miminegash. Heavy rain over the last few days undermined the roadway.

Early in the day RCMP reported a 30-centimeter deep depression. The Department of Highways marked the area as a hazard Monday evening. People living nearby said it got worse overnight, and the road is now closed.

A contractor is on site to make repairs, but said it could take weeks. The bridge was also damaged by the running water.

A contractor has been dispatched to begin repairs, but the road will be closed while the work is done.

The Department of Transportation recommends using the Union Road or Centreline Road to get around the construction.
