Police open office at high school

A Charlottetown police officer is starting his first week at Colonel Gray High school.

The administration and teachers at the school asked the Charlottetown Police to implement the pilot project.Const. Tim Keizer will be there full-time for the next three months.

Keizer said his job will extend beyond just patrolling for traffic violations, drugs and bullying.

"For me just to sit in an office, that won't work at all," said Keizer.

"I'm going to have to be out there with the students, whether it's at basketball games or at a volleyball game or at drama or whatnot. Whatever it takes for them to see that I'm not just the blue uniform. It's good for them to recognize me as the authority, but it's also good to see me in another capacity as well."

Keizer will also be giving presentations and visiting classrooms. If the pilot project is successful, the position may become permanent.

Other schools, including Charlottetown Rural, are also interested in having a police resource officer.
