Charlottetown sidewalks safer thanks to orange paint job

Charlottetown work crews are making it easier for pedestrians to spot bumps and cracks in sidewalks by spraying bright orange paint on the bad spots to warn walkers.

Charlottetown work crews are making it easier for pedestrians to spot bumps and cracks in sidewalks.

City crews have always gone around to rate the bad areas, with the worst ones getting repaired first.

But this year the city has sprayed bright orange paint on the bad spots.

"You know the orange paint certainly is bright, certainly identifies there's something going on there," said Councillor Terry Bernard, chair of the city's public works committee. "It catches your attention so you tend to look and you see deficiencies.

"So the idea of spraying is not only to help us with our system, it's to make it safer for our pedestrians, and that certainly identifies that there's a hazard there and to be careful."

Bernard says the sidewalk repairs may not all get done in the short summer season, so the orange paint will still act as a safety reminder for those left-over problem spots.

The city's current yearly budget for sidewalk repairs, excluding new sidewalks, is $350,000.
