Traditionally dog owners have used the property as a dog-friendly off-leash area. A recent change in the rules affecting the property now meansdogs will have to be more strictly controlled.

Upton Farm Trust has had the 138 acres of land declared a naturally-protected area under the Natural Areas Protection Act.

The act defines a natural area as an area that contains rare, endangered or uncommon wildlife, has exceptional scenery, or provides opportunities for scientific and educational programs.

The trust said it wants to minimize the impact dogs might have on birds and other wildlife on the property.

A consultant will make recommendations on restrictions in the coming weeks.
