Tim Hortons food drive will help restock P.E.I. food bank shelves

Officials with the Upper Room food bank hope the upcoming Tim Hortons food drive will go a long way towards helping to restock the shelves after a very busy winter and spring.

Demand continues to grow with about 30 new households or about 90 new clients using the food bank every month, according to manager Mike MacDonald.

"We've gotten through a busy winter and a busy spring," said MacDonald.

"Certainly our supplies are starting to show the effect of those busy months. We're certainly at the point where we need to restock and make sure that we have enough on hand to get us through the summer months.

"We haven't had a significant food drive since really Christmas time. So it's really coming to us at a great time."

Islanders are being asked to drop offfood items to Tim Hortons restaurants across the province on Friday and Saturday.

The donations go to the food banks in the area where they are given.

MacDonaldnotedthere is a particular need for high protein items like peanut butter, beans, canned meats and tuna.
