Mari Basiletti named as chair of P.E.I. women's advisory council

A new chairperson has been named for Prince Edward Islands Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

A new chairpersonhas been named for Prince Edward Island's Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

MariBasiletti of of Canoe Cove, P.E.I., is a returning member to the board, said Paula Biggar, minister responsible for the Status of Women.

Biggar has also named Deborah Langston of Mount Stewart, P.E.I., to the council.

Langston, a family support worker with the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island, was chosen to serve on the council after applying through the Engage PEI process.

"The nine members of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women do important work promoting women's rights and gender equality. Deborah Langston's appointment, Mari Basiletti's nomination as chair, and the re-appointment of two other members, leaves the advisory council well positioned to work for the women and girls of P.E.I.," said Biggar ina press release.

Other returning members include Melissa Mullen and Patti J. Wheatley.

All members will serve two year terms set to expire in Jan. 2018.

"We are very pleased to have such passionately dedicated Island women appointed to the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Every time there is a new appointment to council, it is a time for fresh ideas that can make a difference for the quality of life for Island women and girls and their families," said Biggar.

There are two vacancies still open for the council.

Biggar said interested women can apply through Engage PEI.
