Sask. company fined $23,800 after worker electrocuted in 2014

A Birch Hills, Sask., company has been fined $23,800 after a worker was electrocuted when some equipment touched a power line.

Darcy Rask Construction Inc. pleaded guilty Aug. 30 to violating occupational health and safety rules.

The company failed to ensure that no worker works and no equipment or powered mobile equipment is used or operated with the minimum distance from any exposed energized electrical conductor, thereby causing a death, the provincial government said in a news release Friday.

The incident occurred on Sept. 15, 2014, near Coleville, when a tractor with a crane came in contact with an overhead high-voltage line, killing the worker who was beside the tractor.

The government didn't name the employee, but he has previously been identified as Kelly Bruce Rolston, of Mayview, Sask.

Rolston, 23, had been helping move metal bins when the accident happened.

Coleville is in west-central Saskatchewan, about 212 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.
