Man arrested in Meadow Lake firearm incident

A 52-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Sask., faces a number of charges in connection with a weapons-related incident at a residence near the city on Saturday night.

RCMP received a call at around 7:10 p.m. CST from a man who said there was someone dead in his house, police stated in a release Sunday.

The man went on to say the victim was actually not dead, but he was going to get a gun and shoot that person. He then abandoned the call, according to police.

RCMP say they found out a woman had been inside the same house, but she fled and was safe in a nearby guest house.

Officers located the woman unharmed and took her to the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment.

RCMP say they spent the next two hours setting up a secure perimeter around the house and maintaining contact with the man.

The man eventually came outside and was arrested at about 10:30 p.m.

Police say a search of the home turned up the following firearms:

• One .22-calibre rifle with ammunition in the magazine.
• One broken .22-calibre rifle.
• One .303-calibre rifle with a box of related ammunition.
• Two pellet gun rifles.
• One toy shotgun.

The man is in custody and will appear in provincial court in Meadow Lake on Tuesday to answer to a number of charges, including two counts of uttering threats.

He faces one count each of assault, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, and resisting arrest.

Meadow Lake is about 250 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
