A new church in Saskatoon is using high-tech solar panels alongside traditional stained glass.

The Cathedral of the Holy Family in the city's northeast has been under construction for two years and is set to hold services beginning Sunday.

A key feature of the church is a unique stained glass installation that includes solar panels to generate electricity for the Cathedral.

Artist Sarah Hall said blending modern solar panels with more traditional stained glass builds on familiar Bible themes.

"Now we are actually making light, we are creating light in the windows that we are using in the cathedral and we are using the sun and we have a partnership with the sun," Hall said.

The Cathedral cost more than $28 million and is the first in the world, Hall said, to incorporate solar panels in the art glass.
