The RCMP musical ride meets virtual reality

The RCMP musical ride is entering the world of virtual reality thanks to a Regina company.

Armed with a pair of big white goggles, Rob Bryanton from Talking Dog Studios explained and demonstrated the technology toSheila Coles today on The Morning Edition.

"We were fortunate last year to go to Ottawa to record the musical ride in 360 degree virtual reality," said Bryanton.

It was quite the process capturing the experience in 3D. Bryanton and his team gave helmets to the riders which had six Go-Pro cameras mounted on them.

"When you look through what was stitched together from the footage that was shot, you are putting on the goggles and seeing yourself as a rider in the musical ride," said Bryanton.

He brought a portable version of the 3D experience to The Morning Edition, but a more sophisticated virtual reality system will be open to the public at the RCMP Heritage Centre beginning March 18.

Bryanton explained what visitors would see and feel when taking the ride at the centre.

"It has a device that gives you the physical vibrations of the hooves as you're sitting on the saddle. Your ears and eyes are telling you that you're on a horse and your bum is telling you that you're on a horse."
