The Regina Food Bank has launched a hunger-fighting campaign that ties in to the Muslim holy month Ramadan.

Fasting is part of Ramadan, so people are encouraged to donate the money they save to the food bank.

People who aren't fasting can also take part, organizers say.

The event was kicked off at the Regina Food Bank this morning with special guests Zarqa Nawaz, creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie and Amir Aboguddah, president of the Muslim Students' Association of Regina.

"The longest day of the year falls in this Ramadan, so yes it's going to be a tough month for Saskatchewan's Muslims with almost 18 hours of fasting", Nawaz said in a news release.

"But Ramadan isn't about being hungry; it's about what are we doing to help those who are hungry in our communities."

Ramadan began June 18 and ends July 16.
