Regina Rams pummeled by No. 1 Dinos 72-8, fall to 0-4

The University of Calgary Dinos are putting together what could be the most dominant seasonin CIS football history.

As for the University of Regina Rams,September 26, 2015 will be a day the teamwould love to scratch from the history books.

But very few football fans in Regina should have been surprised by the results.

The top team in Canadian university football, the University of Calgary Dinos, thrashed Regina 72-8 at Mosaic Stadium.

It's the most points the Rams have allowed since 2006 when they lost 60-48 to UBC. But the 64-point loss is the big difference from the shootout nine years ago.

Calgary has now scored more than 70 points in back-to-back games, outscoring their opponents 152-26.

Calgary quarterback Andrew Buckley was completely dominant through the air. Buckley, an early candidate for the Hec Crighton trophy as Canada's top player, finished the game 21-29 for 478 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Buckley won the 2014 Hec Crighton Trophy, which is awarded annually to CIS football's most outstanding Canadian player.

Second-year Regina quarterback Noah Picton didn't enjoy such a good day. Picton finished the game with only 80 passing yards before he was replaced by third-year pivot Tyler Vieira.

Vieira didn't fare much better, completing only four of his 12 passes for 62 yards.

The lone bright spot for the Rams was third-year running back Michael Webber. At 6-3, 245 pounds, the Guelph, Ont., product was very hard to tackle as he ran for 135 yards on 18 carries. He also scored Regina's only touchdown.

It was Webber's first career start for the Rams. Starting running backAtlee Simon who was one of the best rushers in Canada the first three weeks was out with an injury.

The Rams are now in a major hole with an 0-4. They'll travel to Winnipeg on Friday, Oct. 2 to play the 2-2 University of Manitoba Bisons.

Calgary will play another Saskatchewan opponent next week. The 2-2 University of Saskatchewan Huskies travel to Calgary on Oct. 3. The two teams will also play again Oct. 16 in Saskatoon.
