Regina is seeking feedback from residents on innovative forms of housing called laneway and garden suites.

The suites are rental properties, separate from a house, that are built in a yard or above a garage.

Diana Hawryluk is director of planning for the city.

"We're here, talking to the public to see what they would like to see and how these guidelines would be developed," Hawryluk said at an open house Tuesday night.

The city is aiming to have guidelines in place and to see 20laneway or garden suites built in established neighbourhoods in the spring of 2016.

"It's about sensitive infills," Hawryluk added. "How do we do that in a way that would be suitable for existing neighbourhoods?'

Hawryluk said incorporating rental properties on the property of existing homes may be attractive to homeowners who want extra income to pay off a mortgage. Others may wish to use the space as a suite for a relative.
