Construction set to begin on Regina's new $15M Wascana Pool

The City of Regina has releasedthe concept plan for the new Wascana Pool and says construction preparations have already started.

Thedesign includes a waterslide, lane pool and concession stand, among other aspects. The city saidthe design was developed through extensive public engagement.

The design was approved by the Provincial Capital Commission which operates the park on May 20. The pool is set to open for its first full season in 2023.

"The new Wascana Pool can be enjoyed by everyone and increase visitation to our crown-jewel, Wascana Park," said Mayor Sandra Masters in a statement.

"When it opens, one can expect to see a walk-in leisure pool, lap pool, hot tub, waterslides, lazy river, along with accessible washrooms and change rooms."

Much of the funding for the pool is coming from the province'sMunicipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP), the city says. MEEPis providing $12 million of a total $15.75 million. The remaining $3.75 million is from the city. Fences are being put up this week and construction by PCL is set to start soon.

Therewill also be an accessible playground and spray pad next to the pool, and thepool's concession will be open to both pool and park users.

"We're very excited about this project, how it will encourage local job creation. But in the end, it will create a great experience for residents of Regina and visitors," said Diana Hawryluk, executive director of city planning and community development, at a news conference.

Trees will be replaced at a 3:1 ratio

Some trees are going to be removed for the project. Ten are set to be relocated elsewhere in the park and approximately 60 are being removed. The city says each tree removedwill be replaced by three new trees planted in the park.

Lap swimmers will have a 25-metre pool, with the 50-metre length required for competitionbeinga focus for indoor pools, such as a rebuilt Lawson Aquatic Centre, Hawryluk said. The Lawson Aquatic Centre is set to be replaced in the next decade.

Hawryluk said the cityhasn't decided on pricing for the complex yet, but that it's important to think about low income families and keep it affordable. The spray pad beside the pool will be free for anyone in the park.
