Saskatoon Fire Department called to 4 structure fires in 2 days

It was a busy two days for the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD), with firefighters reporting four calls to structure fires in and around the city.

Crews were battling the fires on Monday and Tuesday but did not report any injuries related to the incidents.

Firefighters were called to the 200 Block of Avenue Y North on Tuesday morning around 7:21 a.m. where adetached double garage was burning northwest of St. Paul's Hospital.

Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the battalion chief were dispatched to the scene andfound the garage fully involved in fire, the SFD said in a news release.

Crews brought the fire under control at 7:43 a.m.

According to investigation, the careless disposal of smoking material caused the fire, which completely destroyed the garage.

The damage is estimated at $75,000, the Saskatoon Fire Department said.

The day before another structure fire required the attention of crews in the city.

Trees and a storage shed were burning around 4:01 a.m. when firefighters were called to the 800 block of Heritage Crescent, in the southeastern part of the city.

The flames coming from the shed were putting a single family home at risk, so crews protected the residence while a firefighter breached the shed door, bringing the fire under control at 4:30 a.m.

The fire is considered suspicious and police are investigating, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

Outside of the city a family home was burning early Monday morning.

Firefighters received a call at 1:12 a.m. and drove to the community of Furdale in Corman Park.

The caller told the Saskatoon Fire Department that all occupants of the building had evacuated, while the rear of their garage was burning and advancing to the other portion of the house, SFD said.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews saw that the large two-storey home with a triple attached garage was fully involved in fire with flames coming from the roof, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

They eventually brought the fire under control at 3:34 a.m. and remained on the scene for another three hours.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has the jurisdiction to investigate this fire, SFD said.

In the city another housewas on fire early Monday morning.

Crews were called to the scene in the 900 block of Main Street at 1:07 a.m.

Three engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the battalion chief made their way to the building in the Nutana neighbourhood, east of Broadway Avenue.

Crews reported flames at the rear exterior of the home with the fire advancing into the roof, according to the Saskatoon Fire Department.

The fire was brought under control at 1:42 a.m. and all residents were able to safely evacuate the structure, said SFD.

Crews turned the scene over to the fire investigator about 90 minutes later, but the cause of the fire is undetermined.

It started in dumpsters lining along the building, causing damage of around $150,000.
