The time is nigh to recycle your old fridge, as SaskPower's fridge recycling program enters its final year.

Under the program, people can arrange to have their old fridges or freezers, made in 2004 and earlier, picked up to be recycled.

It's all offered free of cost, but only until Aug. 31.

SaskPower spokesperson Jonathan Tremblay said the program is ending due to a decrease in demand.

"After six yearswe've gathered a lot of Saskatchewan's old turquoise and tanned fridges. We're seeing less and less requests for this service we offer," he said.

The company said there were 31,000 appliances recycled under the program since 2011. Savings for people who replace their old fridges can be up to $130 a year on your power bill, the company said.

The energy savings through the program was roughly 4.6 megawatts of power, or enough to power nearly 4,500 homes each year.

Recycling old appliances prevents components like Freon, mercury and hydrocarbons from making its way into the environment from landfills.

Appointments can be booked by calling SaskPower or online on the company's website.
