SaskPower iscontinuing a program that letscustomers turn old fridges into cash.

The Crown-owned power utility says it will give people $50 per refrigerator and they'll even have them hauledaway.

The idea is that when people replace their old iceboxes, they'll get a more energy efficient model.

Up to four fridges at a time can be taken away, resulting in a maximum $200 payout. The appliances have to be at least 15 years old and in working condition.

Last year, the company took away 6,500 fridges. This year, it's looking at doing 9,000.

A spokesman for SaskPower said a contractor will remove the freon, disassemble the appliances and recycle or dispose of the materials in an environmentally friendly way.

The company says it prefers energy conservation as an alternative to building new power plants.
