SaskPower's green power option still a go for some

Some SaskPower customers are able to pay extra on their bill to fund renewable power options, but only if they were already signed up for it.

Program hasn't allowed new customers to sign up since 2013

A sustainable SaskPowerbilling program that was put on hold in 2013 is still anoption, but only for customers who were already signed up for it.

The company's GreenPowerprogram went under review two years ago while the company re-evaluatedits environmental strategies.

Program running since early 2000s

The program allowed customers to pay extra on their bills to buy wind power since 2002.

SaskPower responded in an email, saying it does still allow customers to pay a "small premium" for environmentally preferred electricity under the GreenPower program.

However, since 2013, the company hasn't beenaccepting any new GreenPowerusers. SaskPower says that's because they aren't looking to expand the program.

The company says funds from the program continue to go towards operating and maintaining renewable power facilities in Saskatchewan.

The program is still under review.

Clarifications

  • An earlier version of this story stated that the GreenPower option was removed from customer's bills in 2013. In fact, existing Greenpower customers could continue to participate in the program.
