Souls Harbour serves Thanksgiving dinner to people in need

A long line snaked down AtholStreet in front of the Dean Smith Youth Centrein Regina for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission's annual Thanksgiving dinner.

By the time the dinner concluded early Saturday afternoon more than 400 people were served turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings.

John Legault said he could smell it all from two blocks away as he reached the centre. He's been coming to the dinner for a few years. This weekend, he was first in line for the second seating.

"Well, I get my turkey for Thanksgiving and I get to meet a lot of people that are in the same situation as I am," he said, adding he is thankful for all the volunteers whohelped put the meal together.

It was Catherine Reid's second time attending the dinner and she saysit's about more than just a good meal for her.It's also about people coming together, and supportingeach other.

"Getting the ones that really really need to have some form community without feeling like they're totally alone, because there is a lot out there that feel like they are completely alone," she said, adding that she felt likeitwas like being with family.

More than 75 volunteers helped out with the annual dinner from set up, food preparations and cooking, to greeting guests and serving food. Mayor Michael Fougere and MLA Warren McCall were among those who volunteered.
