Village reeling from deaths of 2 teens

Residents of Borden, Sask., will "probably never" get over the deathsof two members of the Borden high school basketball team who died in a traffic accident on their way to a game last week, said pastor Tony Martens.

Funerals for the two teenage boys, Sandon Sutherland, 15 and Greg Sargent, 16,will be held this week.

The two were among five members of the Borden high school basketball team who were on their way to Osler on Thursday when their van collided with a truck on Highway 11.

The other three team members and the driver of the van were injured. The driver of the truck wasn't hurt.

Martens says residents are trying to come to grips with the tragedy. The event will leave a permanent scar on the community, he said.

"How long will it take to get over it? Probably never," Martens said. "It will always be a part of who you are because they're a part of your family."

For the last few years, Martens has also coached Borden's high school basketball team and he knew all of the boys involved.

One of the boys who died, Sandon, wanted to come along to the game Thursday even though he hadn't been playing recently, Martens said.

"He had been hurt for a couple of weeks and missed a couple games and yet was always there for practice and always there for games and wanted to be part of the guys," he said.

Borden is about 55 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
