Benefit concert raises money for children of slain Wilkie, Sask., education worker

A benefit concert is being held in Saskatoon on Saturday night for the children of HeidiVeit, ateaching assistant from Wilkie, Sask., who was killed earlier this year.

"The purpose of the event is to raise money to help put into a trust fund so that her sons can proceed with life, trying to get through this situation and prosper as well as they can," said event co-ordinator Simon Stokalko, who was a friend of Veit's.

"It's also a day to celebrate the life of Heidi Veit because today happens to be her birthday," he added.

Stokalko said 100 per cent of the ticket proceeds will go to Veit's sons, Cole and Zachary.

The concert venue, O'Brians Event Centre, will also donate $2 for every ticket purchased to local women's shelters.

"It would be something that Heidi would do," Stokalko said.

In March, Veit's body was found in the Rural Municipality of Buffalo, five kilometres northeast of Wilkie, after reports of a "suspicious sudden death."

Since then,RCMPhave confirmed that Wesley JohnVeit, Heidi's estranged husband,has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to her death.

"Heidi was a big part of a lot of people's lives and I don't think that some people will be able to replace her," said family friend Danielle Chapman.

"She was a huge impact in so many different ways between kids and adults we miss her and love her."

The concert begins tonight at 7 p.m. CST at O'Brians Event Centre.
