Report outlines good work but recognizes challenges ahead

A committee at city hall in Saskatoon today will receive a report that responds to a call to action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

"Several of the TRC Calls to Action are immediately actionable by the city to improve upon our current relationships with our aboriginal residents," said Gilles Dorval, Director of Aboriginal Relations.

The report outlines a number of practices already underway, including Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training for city employees and police.

But Dorval saidthere's much work to do.

"We've also identified ongoing efforts that will help us to move towards achieving full reconciliation through embedded best practices for aboriginal inclusion in how we provide services."

The report to Executive Committee outlines additional programs that could help the city move forward, including working with a number of aboriginal organizations to come up with a unified action plan.
