The Earl and Countess of Wessex are coming to Saskatchewan this month.

On Thursday Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced that Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are visiting the provincial capital June 22 to 24.

"I am pleased to welcome Their Royal Highnesses to our great province," Wall said. "Saskatchewan continues to have a special relationship with Canada's royal family and it is an honour to again celebrate our longstanding ties with this working visit."

While in Saskatchewan, the earl and countess will visit locations in Regina and surrounding area. The royal couple is also attending the Globe Theatre's 50th Anniversary Gala. Further program details will be announced closer to the visit dates.

This will be the earl's 38th visit to Canada and sixth visit to Saskatchewan. It will be the countess' first visit to the province.

Prince Edward first visited Saskatchewan in 1978 with his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, followed by individual visits in 1994, 2003, 2006 and 2014.

Saskatchewan's first royal visit occurred in 1882, when Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise visited with her husband the Marquis of Lorne, Canada's Governor General. The visit was highlighted by the naming of Regina after her mother.
