Funeral service today for baby boy killed in Saskatoon

Familymembers of a six-week-old baby boy killed in Saskatoon last Sundayfaced the difficult task of saying their goodbyes totheinfantat a funeral service atGeorge Gordon First Nation today.

According to an obituary, friends and family of Nikosis Jace Cantre were invited to gather at the community's new gym at 2 p.m. Saturday to remember the infant.

Cantre was found injured at around 7 a.m. CST in Saskatoon's College Park neighbourhood on July 3. Police say he died in hospital.

A wake for the child was also held at the George Gordon First Nation on Friday and a vigil was held in Saskatoon on Tuesday.

At the vigil, the baby's grandfather Jeffery Longman spoke to a crowd of supporters holding candles or stuffed toys.

"I'd like to thank everybody for coming out and showing their support to my daughter and son-in-law. Such a big loss, our grandson. We honour him tonight," Longman said.

"Such a tragedy. Hurts right here," he said, tapping his chest.

A 16-year-old girl is charged with second-degree murder in relation to Cantre's death.

She had escaped from the city's Kilburn Hall youth detention centre at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, according to the provincial government, where she had been serving a previous sentence.
