89-year-old 'Jam Man' vows to keep going despite Prince Albert, Sask. robbery

Charlie Squires isn't going to let a little thing like a robbery slow him down.

For years, the89-year-old has been known as 'Jam Man' around Prince Albert, Sask.

Squires makes homemade jam in his tiny seniors condominium unit, then sells it, raising thousands of dollars for local charities.

Earlier this month, Squires was asleep in his chair, when a woman came into his room, asking to buy some jam. When she left, around $400 was missing.

"I was going into my bedroom when she bumped into me," said Squires. "I thought nothing of it. But when she bumped into me, while I was getting the jams, she stole my pocketbook."

He isn't entirely sure how the woman got into the locked complex, but guesses she may have entered hisroom after he propped the door open to cool the space.

Squires said money wasn't the only thing missing from his home.

"I didn't even mind her robbing all of my cash, but to steal a man's whiskey, that's bad," he said.

Since the robbery, people in Prince Albert have set up an online fundraising account. To date, the page has raised almost all of the money back.

"It's great," he said. "People are really very, very good to me. It just shows that if you help other people, they help you."

Squires plans to continue making jam for as long as he can.

"I pick all my own fruit," he said. "It gives me a reason to stay living."
