Man found guilty of 2nd-degree murder in 2015 Saskatoon stabbing

A man charged in a fatal stabbing that occurred during an altercation in a Saskatoon parking lot nearly two years ago has been found guilty of second-degree murder.

After several hours of deliberation, a jury returned with the verdict Thursday in the trial of Alvin Patrick Junior Naistus.

The 26-year-old accused had argued he was defending himself in April 2015 when he stabbed William Johnston in the parking lot of Northwoods Inn and Suites. The 44-year-old man died in hospital.

Jurors saw video of the altercation and heard from people who witnessed the violence.

Sentencing arguments will be heard Monday to determine how much time Naistus should serve in prison.

Second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for at least 10 years.
