Saskatoon police arrest 2 more suspects in 'grandparent emergency scam'

Saskatoon police say there are new suspects and new charges in an ongoing investigation into a so-called "grandparent emergency scam."

Police arrested two men from Quebec, 25 and 26 years old, on Jan. 11 after an officer spotted a "vehicle of interest" on 22nd St. West in Saskatoon around 10:45 p.m. CST.

"A traffic stop of the vehicle was initiated and its occupants were arrested without incident," police said in a news release.

Police arrested the first suspect on Jan. 10. He was released from custody on Jan. 11, and then almost immediately re-arrested.

The three men are charged with 10 counts of fraud over $5,000.

"In each case, it was reported to investigators that victims handed over money to a man claiming to be a courier, bailiffor bail bondsman," police said.

"Generally, the suspect(s)have personal details regarding the victim's family and friends upon initial contact. While it has not been confirmed, investigators believe this personal information might have been accessed online."
