Saskatoon police say they have a person ofinterest in the investigation of a five-year-old boy's death that is considered a homicide.

Emergency crews responded to a report of an injured child at a home in the 400 block of Avenue R South at 5:30 a.m. CST Saturday.

Police said the boy suffered a fatal injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have also clarified that while they have a person of interest in the investigation, nobody is considered a suspect at this time.

There are no details about how the child got hurt, but police said they know the cause of death.

We have a tragedy here," said Alyson Edwards with the Saskatoon police at a press conference held Saturday afternoon. "We are doing our best to try and get some answers," she said.

Police said there were three other people in the home when officers arrived.

"Its hard for our officers to deal with. I cant imagine what it is like for the family," said Edwards. Any type of homicide is tragic, but when youre dealing with a small child, five years old, its awful."

The police Major Crimes Unit are interviewing witnesses, while members of the Forensic Identification Unit aregathering evidence from the scene.

This is Saskatoon's first homicide of 2014.
