Man shot and killed by RCMP on Fishing Lake First Nation

Moose Jaw police are investigating after a man was killed by Saskatchewan RCMP.

Two officers from the Wadena detachment responded. Shortly after officers arrived on scene, at least one of the officers fired their weapon and the man was injured as a result.

Police officers called for assistance and performed first aid on the man until paramedics from the Wadena Emergency Medical Service arrived on scene.

Additional RCMP officers also arrived to help secure the scene and assist paramedics with the injured man. RCMP say he died on scene.

"This is a tragic incident for everyone involved, including the family of the deceased, the community and our officers," said RCMP Chief Superintendent Alfredo Bangloyin a statement issued onTuesday."We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and the community of Fishing Lake First Nation."

The two police officers involved in the shooting were relieved as soon as possible, which is RCMP protocol. Alongside the Moose Jaw Police Service, the RCMP has also asked the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer to "assess the quality" of the external investigation.

RCMP won't be providing further details at this time to ensure it does not interfere with the independence of the external investigations.
