Sask. harvest 80% done as snow arrives

Snow is putting harvest on hold for some Saskatchewan producers, with 80 per cent of the crop in the bin across the province.

Thursday's crop report indicated harvest is slightly behind the five-year average of 86 per cent combined. Along with the 80 per cent combined, 14 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The southeast is furthest ahead, at 88 per cent done. West-central Saskatchewan is the furthest behind at 73 per cent.

The snow isn't the first significant precipitation farmers are having to contend with this harvest. The province said the Hazenmore area saw 91 millimetres of rain over the last two weeks. Redvers and Tantallon reported 76 millimetres over the same period.

Strong winds and flooding have damaged crops, resulting in yield and quality loss. Yield estimates remain average to above average for most crops.
