Saskatoon man who abandoned ice-fishing shack fined $2,800

A Saskatoon man who abandoned agarbage-strewn ice-fishing shack has been fined $2,800, the province says.

Recently in Saskatoon provincial court, Doug Leard was convicted of littering and leaving an unmarked ice-fishing shelter on ice-covered waters on Blackstrap Lake, about 32 kilometres south of the city.

Ice fishermen are supposed to leave proper identification if they leave their shelters and they're supposed to take them down by March 15 if they're located south of Highway 16 (March 31 if north of Highway 16).

The shack in question was still up after the deadline.

The Environment Ministry says Leard was identified as the owner of the shack and was charged.

According to the ministry, "a considerable amount" of garbage was left behind in the shelter, resulting in the littering charge.
