Saskatoon police hand out first fine for Public Health Act violation

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) laid its first fine for violating public health restrictions in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A protest against mandatory masks took place inside Saskatoon's Midtown mall last weekend. Police were called and attended the scene, but officers did not lay any charges at the time.

But the SPS announced Friday that it has laid its first charge under the Public Health Act in connection with the rally.

Police issued a fine for $2,800 to "one of the key participants," police said.

Police are still investigating.

Dr. Saqib Shahab, Saskatchewan's chief medical health officer, has said there is evidence that masks have a significant impact on transmission of COVID-19.

Starting Monday, Saskatchewan residents who live in communities with populations of at least 5,000, or who live around Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, will have to wear masks inside all indoor public spaces,Health MinisterPaul Merrimanannounced Friday.
