Saskatchewan's Consumer Protection Division has come out with some hints for travellers following a case of alleged travel fraud earlier this year.

Dozens of travellers were stranded when T & T Travel Ltd. in Kindersley, Sask. went out of business. At the time, police said they had received more than 200 fraud complaints in connection to the incident.

While the province was able to help some of the customers get their money back, not everyone was so lucky.

Here are some of the province'stips for travellers who want to avoid such problems:

  • Pay with a credit card: The division says it's generally easier for consumers to get a refund through their credit card provider.
  • Avoid cheque or cash deposits: Paying with cash generally makes it more difficult to receive a refund if something goes wrong.
  • Do your homework: The division recommends doing your research and checking with the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies to make sure the company has a good reputation in the travel community.
