Blue-green algae confirmed in Ramsey, Wanapitei, and Hannah lakes

Sudbury's Health Unit confirms thatblooms of blue-green algae have been foundin three Sudbury lakes.

Samples taken from Ramsey Lake, Lake Wanapitei, and Hannah Lake this month have tested positive for the bacteria, the health unit said.

A spokesperson said in a release that the drinking water supply from Ramsey is protected.

Blue-green algal blooms have an unsightly pea soup appearance and foul smell, and can produce toxins that can cause sickness, diarrhea and vomiting.

The blooms are also unanchored, which means they can move around a lake.

The Health Unit advises people who see and smell the blooms near the shore to steer clear, and keep pets out of the water.
