Sudbury city councillors have shut down a proposed retirement home development planned for the city's south end. We have highlights from the planning committee meeting.

Greater Sudbury's planning committee gave a thumbs down Monday night to a retirement development in the city's South End.

The three-storey complex which was supposed to be built in the city's Moonglo neighbourhood was designed to have 144 apartment units and 108 guest rooms.

City councillors shot down the plan after public outcry.

Some residents at the meeting, like Bruce Shaw, spoke out against the proposed complex.

"You haven't heard anybody say that type of development isn't needed in Sudbury, but what they've said basically is it has a tremendous impact on our neighbourhood. That is not well fleshed out right now, but we know it's going to be bad."

The proposed development would have had 144 apartment units and 108 guest rooms.

Councillors changed their minds after hearing from concerned residents, like John Gallien.

"There are no three-storey buildings in Moonglo. There are only single and two-storey homes, and this project is going to be built right in the heart of an enclosed subdivision," he said. "[Is it] compatible? I don't know."

More than 20 Moonglo residents spoke out against the retirement development. The committee's decision means the property will remain as a low residential area.
