Northeastern Ontario municipal election results 2014

There are some new mayors throughout northeastern Ontario, as some incumbents were voted out in the election on Monday night.

There are some new mayors throughout northeastern Ontario, as some incumbents were voted out in the election on Monday night.

In Elliot Lake, Rick Hamilton lost his mayor's seat to DanMarchisella. He said his lack of political experience was an advantage.

"It affects the community when so many negative things have happened in the last couple of years," he said.

Hamilton had been seeking his third term as mayor, but came in last.

Some in Elliot Lake said they are not surprised there was such little support for the status quo, in light of everything that was exposed by the public inquiry into the deadly mall collapse.

In Sault Ste. Marie, DebbieAmaroso lost her seat to ChristianProvenzano by nearly 2,000 votes.

"Our campaign said, 'Look, Sault Ste. Marie is a great place and we love it, but there are some serious challenges here and we need to address those challenges and they are not being addressed,'" he said.

"I think that resonated with people."

With Tom Laughren not running in Timmins, city councillor Steve Black has won that race for the top spot.

Black said he thinks his work as a city councillor for the past four years put him over the top.

"I've been very actively involved in the community and tried to do my best in getting back to residents and really voice their concerns around the table," he said.

"I think a lot of it has to do with the last four years."

In North Bay, incumbent Al McDonald has been re-elected.
