Operation Impact set for long weekend

Sudbury Police are joining other police forces in a national campaign this weekend to try and make Canadas roads the safest in the world.

Police said the initiative has been strategically chosen for the long weekend between October 10 and 13, as more people will be on the roads.

In a release, the Greater Sudbury Police Traffic Management Unit said it is involved annually in the project because they have seen too many deaths, pain and broken hearts that result from carelessness behind the wheel.

In Sudbury, a variety of safety blitzes will be taking place.

• Friday, October 10 RIDE locations will be in place in different parts of the city
• Saturday, October 11 Distracted driving enforcement: Police say they are adding extra unmarked vehicles on the roads looking for driversusing cell phones and other distractions behind the wheel.
• Sunday, October 12 Seatbelt Enforcement: Officers will be standing on street corners and at stop signs so they can see clearly everyone in the vehicle.
• Monday, October 13 Aggressive Driving: Police say there is zero tolerance for any aggressive driving.

Other police forces in the region, including provincial police, North Bay Police, Sault Ste. Marie Police and Timmins Police, are also part of the initiative.
