OPP steps up waterway patrols, looking for impaired drivers

Ontario Provincial Police are stepping up their presence as people head out on the water this Canada Day.

They'll be patrolling marinas and docks to make sure people are following boating rules.

Inspector Mark Andrews said there have already been four deaths in provincial waterways this year, and police aim to prevent any more tragedies from happening.

"We need people to make sure that they're not taking alcohol out onto the water," he said.

Police will be checking to ensure boaters aren't impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Theywill also "make sure that all their safety equipment is in the boats, [and] make sure everyone has a personal floatation device or a life jacket."

Andrews said 20 people drowned in Ontario last year 17 of whom were not wearing life jackets.
