Sudbury bus ticket swindle prompts tighter rules

A new policy that came out of the Sudbury transit ticket scandal was approved by city council at a meeting Tuesday.

The tighter contract management rules follow the loss of 800,000 public dollars.

The money was owed to the city by a private company contracted to sell bus tickets over several years.

It was later revealed that staff didn't raise red flags when the company stopped making payments to the city.

Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk said she likes the new policy.

"We need to be on these things. That if people aren't paying their bills or there's money owed to the city that we're not waiting."

The city has previously said that other internal rules were tightened up following the transit ticket scandal.

Matichuk has also said that "action was taken" with the city employees involved, but has refused to give any details.
